Don't Call Us
1986
A large-scale installation that placed the viewer within the metaphor, DON'T CALL US evoked the stress and indignities of looking for work. A human-sized maze of gridded walls led through an environment of audio, video and mounted text. As they progressed, spectators heard a variety of audio texts about unemployment and the process of being hired, and passed hundreds of job descriptions mounted on the walls behind the impassable grids. At the end of the maze, positioned just out of reach behind more grid-work, employment applications were piled high on gray metal desks, and numerous video monitors showed hands at work performing dozens of minimum-wage jobs.
